... ducks take some shots

jdefede@herald.com

Also last week, I wrote a column about my childhood pet duck, Kelly, as a way of expressing outrage at the duck-killing frenzy that was taking place at The Greens in Doral. I argued that if we are hellbent on developing land on the edge of the Everglades, folks there ought to learn how to live with nature.

Many readers wrote me with their own duckling stories, but a few became quite peeved at my antidevelopment message. 'These are not even native ducks so therefore it has nothing to do with how the urban sprawl is ruining `the very things that make this place special,' '' wrote J.H. 'Are you kidding me? These ducks weren't here first. Did you even read the article? They're from South America and were brought here by man. If they were indigenous animals, you might have a point, but they're not, so find something else to criticize and use as a metaphor for the `insidious growth' that is deteriorating the very moral fibers that make this county great.''

J.H. is right. The Muscovy ducks that populate the western edges of Miami-Dade County were brought here from South America approximately 100 years ago.

So I'll make a deal with all those duck-killing sociopaths out there: If you live in a development that is more than 100 years old and you are having trouble with Muscovy ducks, you go right ahead and bash their little brains in. Otherwise, leave them alone
