A Muscovy Tale from Texas

I live in Farmers Branch Texas and my office is in Lewisville, Texas which is about 30 miles north of Dallas.

Daisy our new resident Muscovy just flew in one morning and came back every morning thereafter.  As I said we started hand feeding her. She is very friendly and loves all the people at the office.  We talk to her and she just chatters back, which is so neat Some of us at the office thank she may have been someones pet possibly.   She likes bread, and of all things Pop Tarts (Blueberry seem to be her favorite)  She keeps the bugs cleaned up around the entrance door.  June bugs are a realy tasty treat to her.  The first day we noticed her nest, she had two eggs, the next day there were seven and on the third day prior to her sitting on the nest, we counted eleven.  We guard her closely!  We have put up signs around her nest which is underneath the bushes "Please do not disturb mama duck "Daisy" or her nest"

We are in somewhat of a rural area in Lewisville. Our office building set about 450 feet off the main road, we have a BIG Circle driveway and Daisy would make that her landing zone each day and then waddle up to the front of the building.  Every afternoon she would go down to the small pond behind the building and chat and play with the four Mallard ducks there.  They have since disappeared now that she is setting her nest.  She has become quite the talk of the office.  Most of our clients know of her and they love her as much as we do.  We are not quite sure what to do when all her babies arrive.  Me being an animal lover, said I'll just take them home to my house and put them in the back yard.  Nice thought except for the four dogs we have at home.

Right now we have hen scratch and water sitting by her nest, as she never leaves it (Not that we can see)  Our work day starts about 5:30am and ends about 7:30pm, so she does not have alot of alone time.  I will try to get a picture of her and email it to you.  She is very beautiful.  Brown & White Chest, with a white neck and head with brown spots. Her back and wings are the multi colored (Greenish, bluish purplish mixed in with the dark brown of course)  I love the red rough comb around her eyes and beak.  She loves to be petted.  The first time I picked her up and held her, she was a little apprhensive, however, she seemed to enjoy it as long as we didn't get too far away from the ground.  She loves to sit on my knee as I squat to touch her. She is quite the girl.  I have become very attached, in case you couldn't tell.  I will keep you updated when her babies hatch.  Love your website.  Congrats to you for all your help with Muscovies.  I know they appreciate you beyond what any words could ever express.  All of our dogs were throw away and rescued dogs, so I know how it is to save a life.  They mean as much to me as my kids & grandkids do.

A Rescue Story

"I met a lady a few years ago by the name of Eunice Sivertsen, who inspired me.  I have a newfound respect, not only for animals, but for those who so generously give their time to care for abused, injured and unwanted animals of all kinds.  Eunice & Charlie are these kind of people.

This is how I first came in contact with Duck Haven.  I found a duck with a fish hook in its throat and was referred to Eunice.  She took my hurting friend, and I took a 'repaired one" to return to the canal in my back yard.  What a feeling of joy to see an animal set free and to save one's life.

Many fish hooks & injuries later, I have a whole group of ducks 'fixed' by Duck haven living a happy life here. "
